Michael Jerling has been writing, recording and performing his own songs for over fifty years. His baritone voice is backed up with consummate skill on six and twelve string guitars, harmonica and mandolin, all buoyed by his dry sense of humor. He displays a first-rate lyrical sense and impressive musicianship, borrowing from blues, rock, country and R&B. A keen student of the good and ghastly in American life, Michael weaves themes like a novelist, evoking our shortcomings and dreams without yielding to cynicism or sentimentality. Often praised as a “songwriter’s songwriter,” he’s been characterized as an artist who performs his “extraordinary songs with the uncommon ability to deliver them to an audience with power and grace.”

Born and raised in Illinois, songwriter Michael Jerling became involved with music while helping to run the campus coffeehouse at the University of Wisconsin – Eau Claire. Now settled in Saratoga Springs, New York, Michael has been a noted artist on the club, college and festival circuits of North America. Michael was a winner of the prestigious “New Folk” competition at the Kerrville Folk Festival in Texas, and his involvement with the seminal Fast Folk Musical Magazine in New York City led to his song “Long Black Wall” being included in the Smithsonian Folkways CD celebrating twenty years of Fast Folk.

GNP is a jazz piano trio featuring Tyler Giroux on piano, Matt Niedbalski on drums, and Dylan Perrillo on bass. Tyler, Matt, and Dylan have been playing together for several years. Their first performances as a group were at the Speakeasy 518 in Albany, New York, a cocktail bar known for its prohibition era ambiance and live jazz. Through countless gigs the trio grew together as a unit, playing as a stand-alone group as well as backing up instrumental soloists and vocalists.

In 2020, a shared passion for original music led to the decision to record their debut album as a group, “Codes.” “Codes” is a reference to the band’s musical communication, the unique vocabulary and cues the group developed over years of playing and growing together. The album consists of 9 original pieces composed by Tyler, Matt, and Dylan, as well as one standard, Gershwin’s “But Not For Me.” You can check out the album here.

Since the release of “Codes” GNP has performed at a myriad of festivals and theaters in and around New York. A favorite moment of the group was backing up the legendary vocalist Sheila Jordan as a part of the Québec Jazz in June festival. GNP released it’s sophomore album “Returning” on Signal Path Records in January of 2025.
