The following year\, Sponge released the now iconic\, Platinum-selling debut album\, “Rotting Piñata\,” to global\, critical and commercial success. \nAfter two top 10 hit singles\, several tours and live television performances\, including the Jon Stewart Show and Late Night with David Letterman\, Sponge followed up their debut with 1996’s “Wax Ecstatic.” This sophomore effort garnered a “Song Of The Year” nod\nfrom Rolling Stone Magazine for title track “Wax Ecstatic.” The album also yielded two additional top 10 hit singles and featured a guest vocal appearance from Richard Butler of the Psychedelic Furs on the song “I Am Anastasia.” \nSince then\, Sponge continues to release new music and keeps a near-constant tour schedule to the pleasure of their legion of loyal followers. \nThough continually led by Vinnie Dombroski\, Sponge’s lead singer and chief songwriter\, the band has seen a few line-up changes over the course of its 30+ year career. Sponge currently features: Andy Patalan (guitar\, vocals) and his brother Tim Patalan (bass). The Patalan brothers were a natural addition to the band\, having previously engineered and produced the first three Sponge records at their studio\, The Loft\, in Saline\, Michigan. The Brothers Patalan are joined by Kyle Neely (guitar) and recent addition\, former Taproot drummer Dave Coughlin. \nSponge’s discography includes nine studio albums\, four live albums\, and seven charting singles; 4 of which have made Billboard Magazines top 10. Their first performances as a group were at the Speakeasy 518 in Albany\, New York\, a cocktail bar known for its prohibition era ambiance and live jazz. Through countless gigs the trio grew together as a unit\, playing as a stand-alone group as well as backing up instrumental soloists and vocalists. \nIn 2020\, a shared passion for original music led to the decision to record their debut album as a group\, “Codes.” “Codes” is a reference to the band’s musical communication\, the unique vocabulary and cues the group developed over years of playing and growing together. Rainbow Full of Sound will perform selections from the Grateful Dead’s 5/8/77 Barton Hall show from Cornell University\, followed by a mashup set of Grateful Dead & Led Zeppelin. \nIt’s somewhat boggling to think of Jerry Garcia and Jimmy Page swapping riffs – the beatific Buddha and the slashing\, edgy Page. But as veteran player of Grateful Dead music Waynard Scheller noticed one night\, the chords of the Dead anthem “St. Stephen” merged seamlessly into “Whole Lotta Love.” Then he sat down and found lots of pairs of songs that fit together. And thus was born “Dead-Zep\,” a new band formed from his Rainbow Full of Love to mash up the two repertoires. \nThey not only flow from Zep to Dead and back again\, they play Zep songs like the GD and Dead songs the way Zep would…which makes for a fascinating\, sometimes shocking evening. Hearing “Ramble On” suddenly dissolve into “St. Stephen” can be amazing to the point of a slight and interesting sense of disorientation. Rob explores an improvised approach to the rock\, folk\, blues\, R&B and soul catalog… playing everything from gospel tunes to Lou Reed\, and whatever lies in between. Reinterpreting many of his own songs\, as well as the whole experience\, will leave you in a soulful mood. The show is slightly akin to a Jerry Garcia Band show with a more rock edge. Never the same show\, never the same approach\, the band includes Tony Perrino on organ. Tony toured with ex-Allman Brothers Band guitarist Dan Toller for 10 years and solidifies the southern blues and soul elements in the band. Then settle in for the movie and a Q& A with various members of the band we miss so much. \nThe Movie\nA documentary film directed by Rob Lichter (Bert Blotto) that chronicles the career of the Upstate NY-based 1980s new wave band\, Blotto\, a band that flew too close to the sun to make it really big.\n\n  \nBlotto rose from the ashes of the Star-Spangled Washboard Band and scored an unlikely hit with I Wanna Be A Lifeguard in the early 80’s — thanks in part to getting airplay on MTV when the network launched August 1\, 1981.\n  \nThe film follows their struggles to land a major label deal despite huge success with touring (ex: The Blot & Blue Tour with Blue Oyster Cult) and releasing their own EPs and Albums.\n\n  \nThe movie features hits like:\n\n“I Wanna Be A Lifeguard” (Day One on MTV)\nMetalhead\nI Quit\nWhen the Second Feature Starts\nGoodbye\, Mr Bond\nShe’s Got a Big Boyfriend\nMy Baby’s the Star of a Driver’s Ed Movie\n\nBonus Features: archival footage\, performances\, and interviews documenting their comedic\, genre-bending style.\n\n  \nSaratoga Connection\nThis is where it all began!\nThe formed\, practiced and played their first shows at 17 MAPLE (later knows as the Metro and now the Night Owl).
