When the world went into isolation\, this group of Saratoga Springs High School graduates—then just 15 and 16-year-old friends—refused to give in to disillusionment. Instead\, they picked up instruments\, took those proverbial lemons\, and made “Melonade”. What started as a way to pass the time quickly became an integral part of their lives\, and by June 2021\, Melon played its first live show\, capitalizing on a shared desire to abandon isolation and embrace the collective joy of live music. \nIn September 2021\, the band hosted its first standalone concert: “Melon Mash”. The community turnout was so electric that multiple “Mashes” followed\, interspersed with gigs at local venues\, private parties\, and charity events. For Melon and their loyal following\, each high-energy gig became an escape\, a ritual\, and a celebration of brotherhood. \nWhile primarily labeled as a jam band\, Melon’s sprawling repertoire effortlessly weaves through psychedelic grooves\, tight reggae beats\, upbeat classic rock energy\, and modern funk rhythms—covering everyone from the Grateful Dead and Bob Marley to Sublime and Stevie Wonder. \nAs the band members have grown older and built lives outside their hometown\, their live shows aren’t as common as they once were. He notes his live show has become a personal journey for him\, one where he lets you in on with an infectious energy that leaves you wanting more. The following year\, Sponge released the now iconic\, Platinum-selling debut album\, “Rotting Piñata\,” to global\, critical and commercial success. \nAfter two top 10 hit singles\, several tours and live television performances\, including the Jon Stewart Show and Late Night with David Letterman\, Sponge followed up their debut with 1996’s “Wax Ecstatic.” This sophomore effort garnered a “Song Of The Year” nod\nfrom Rolling Stone Magazine for title track “Wax Ecstatic.” The album also yielded two additional top 10 hit singles and featured a guest vocal appearance from Richard Butler of the Psychedelic Furs on the song “I Am Anastasia.” \nSince then\, Sponge continues to release new music and keeps a near-constant tour schedule to the pleasure of their legion of loyal followers. \nThough continually led by Vinnie Dombroski\, Sponge’s lead singer and chief songwriter\, the band has seen a few line-up changes over the course of its 30+ year career. Through countless gigs the trio grew together as a unit\, playing as a stand-alone group as well as backing up instrumental soloists and vocalists. \nIn 2020\, a shared passion for original music led to the decision to record their debut album as a group\, “Codes.” “Codes” is a reference to the band’s musical communication\, the unique vocabulary and cues the group developed over years of playing and growing together. Rainbow Full of Sound will perform selections from the Grateful Dead’s 5/8/77 Barton Hall show from Cornell University\, followed by a mashup set of Grateful Dead & Led Zeppelin. \nIt’s somewhat boggling to think of Jerry Garcia and Jimmy Page swapping riffs – the beatific Buddha and the slashing\, edgy Page. But as veteran player of Grateful Dead music Waynard Scheller noticed one night\, the chords of the Dead anthem “St. Stephen” merged seamlessly into “Whole Lotta Love.” Then he sat down and found lots of pairs of songs that fit together. And thus was born “Dead-Zep\,” a new band formed from his Rainbow Full of Love to mash up the two repertoires. \nThey not only flow from Zep to Dead and back again\, they play Zep songs like the GD and Dead songs the way Zep would…which makes for a fascinating\, sometimes shocking evening. Hearing “Ramble On” suddenly dissolve into “St. Stephen” can be amazing to the point of a slight and interesting sense of disorientation. It’s a wide\, wide world. \nWaynard has been touring up and down the East Coast for years\, delighting Dead Heads and other listeners. He founded Dead-Zep with a rotating cast in 2018\, and then ran into the pandemic.
